With regards to my questions about the API I was asking about the API itself and not the apps built around it. I asked about the API specifically because, well, I’m a programmer and I want to write a desktop client for Mixx. I was poking around the API docs a few weeks back and found them lacking especially the docs concerning authentication for desktop apps.

As it stands right now it’s easy to build web-based apps around the API, but it is not possible to build desktop apps around it. All the data the API’s provide right now are also already available as RSS feeds. Namely the “thingies” are essentially items in an RSS feed so the API as it stands right now is redundant (read: useless).

Some details about the app I am planning on building. Unfortunately the current API does not have everything I need to build something that:

    * will run as a desktop client. I’m planning on doing a cross-platform app, personally I run Linux. Posting this from a Windows machine because I’m doing some stuff in Flash.
    * will be able to analyze voting patterns for users. This will help in in spotting voting rings and sock puppets.
    * will provide a customized view of “My Mixx”. Right now, I find the current “My Mixx” layout a bit frustrating.
    * will be able to monitor submissions to communities and groups that you are not a part of.
    * will have all sorts of goodies to make life easier for Mixxers and Supermixxers.

Honestly I don’t even need an API to be able to do all of that. I can just write a desktop app that will scrape content and present them in my app the way I want to. But that will probably get my ass banned on Mixx. So there. Please if you get the chance to have Kerry again or Bill on Social Blend I would really like to hear what they have planned for this. I already emailed Bill as instructed by someone on Mixx Feedback but I got no reply from him.

    Nimrod -

The API actually does quite a bit more than the RSS feeds do. There is, for example, no way to post content or comments via RSS feeds, but the API allows for this. It is also not impossible to write a desktop app; only authentication this way is undocumented. It will be documented when the next release of the API comes out with support for OAuth. You should have responses to your requests in your mailbox. I regret that you find our API useless; others have found it to be quite useful.

Just to clarify, I don’t find the entire API itself to be “useless”, it’s just the thingies API. You can already get much of the data that you can get from the thingies API via the available RSS feeds. With the exception of per user thingies of course.

That would be awesome! Thanks Bill!
